Essential Nepali phrases for trekkers and hikers on Nepal's trails
Nepal is a trekking paradise, home to eight of the world's fourteen highest peaks. Whether you're heading to Everest Base Camp, trekking the Annapurna Circuit, or exploring the Langtang Valley, these phrases will help you communicate with locals, teahouse owners, and fellow trekkers along the trail.
On Nepal's trekking trails, it's customary to greet fellow trekkers and locals with "Namaste" as you pass. When entering a teahouse, removing your shoes is polite. Porters carry incredibly heavy loads — always yield the trail to them and treat them with respect.
